Which kit should I start with?

  • Milk kefir: the Kefir Making Kit with glass jar, plus live milk kefir grains.
  • Water kefir: the same kit plus water kefir grains.
  • Kombucha: a SCOBY, a glass jar of at least 1.5 litres, and swing-top bottles for the second ferment.

A safety tip: use glass, food-grade plastic or stainless steel. Avoid aluminium, copper, brass, iron and galvanised metal, which react with acid, and avoid glazed earthenware for kombucha.

Questions about starter kits
What do I need to make kefir at home?

Kefir grains, milk, a glass jar, a cloth cover with a rubber band, a plastic strainer and a wooden or plastic spoon. The Kefir Making Kit has the tools.

Can I use a metal strainer?

A stainless-steel strainer is fine, because the grains touch it for only a few seconds. Avoid aluminium, copper, brass, iron and galvanised metal. A plastic strainer is the safest choice.

Are the grains included?

Only in the bundles that say so. Otherwise grains are sold separately.
