Good to know

  • Grains are sold separately. Only the options that say so include kefir grains.
  • Plastic, not metal. The strainer and spatula are plastic, so no reactive metal touches your grains.
  • Easy to look after. Wash by hand in warm, soapy water and let everything air-dry. Replace the cloth when it wears thin.
What’s included

Depending on the option you choose:

  • Strainer only: a fine-mesh plastic strainer
  • Spatula + Muslin Cloth: a plastic spatula and a muslin cloth
  • Strainer + Muslin Cloth: a plastic strainer and a muslin cloth
  • Strainer + Spatula: a plastic strainer and a plastic spatula
  • Full Kit: strainer, spatula and muslin cloth
  • Full Kit + Glass Jar: strainer, spatula, muslin cloth and a glass jar

No reactive metal. Kefir grains are sold separately unless the option says they are included.

How to use
  1. Put your kefir grains in the clean glass jar and add milk (1 to 2 teaspoons of grains for up to 1 litre of milk).
  2. Cover the jar with the muslin cloth and hold it on with a rubber band while the kefir ferments, usually 12 to 24 hours.
  3. Stir gently with the spatula, then pour the kefir through the strainer into a bowl or bottle. The grains stay in the strainer.
  4. Use the spatula to move the grains into fresh milk and start the next batch.

Care: wash by hand in warm, soapy water, rinse well and let everything air-dry. Replace the cloth when it wears thin. Full guide: milk kefir guide.

Kefir making kit in Pakistan: strainer, spatula, muslin cloth and glass jar

Making kefir needs only a few simple tools: a strainer to lift the grains out, a spatula or spoon that is not reactive metal, a cloth cover and a clean glass jar. This kefir making kit, delivered across Pakistan, puts them together so your first batch goes smoothly. Choose single items, the full kit, or the full kit with a glass jar. Kefir grains are not included unless the option says so.

Which option should you choose?

  • Already have a clean glass jar? Choose the Full Kit: strainer, spatula and muslin cloth.
  • Starting from nothing? Choose the Full Kit + Glass Jar, which includes a kefir jar, then add live grains.
  • Only missing one tool? Pick the strainer on its own, or a pair such as strainer + spatula or strainer + muslin cloth.

Kefir strainer, spatula and cloth: what each tool does

If you are looking for a kefir strainer in Pakistan, this fine plastic one is made for kefir grains. The other tools do these jobs:

  • The kefir strainer lifts the grains out of the finished kefir. A fine mesh keeps small grains from slipping through.
  • The kefir spatula stirs the milk and moves the grains into a fresh jar without touching them with your hands.
  • The muslin cloth for kefir covers the jar so the kefir can breathe while dust and insects stay out. Hold it on with a rubber band.

Choose your grains

You also need kefir grains. Take live milk kefir grains for creamy, tangy kefir, dehydrated milk kefir grains if you would rather start later, or water kefir grains for a dairy-free, fizzy drink. You can also browse all starter kits.

Questions people ask

Can I use a metal strainer?

A stainless-steel strainer is fine, because the grains touch it for only seconds. Avoid aluminium, copper, brass, iron and galvanised metal. A plastic strainer is the safest choice, which is why this kit uses one.

Are kefir grains included?

Only in the options that say so. Otherwise they are sold separately.

Can I use the same tools for water kefir or kombucha?

The strainer and spatula work for water kefir too. Kombucha is usually brewed in a jar with a cloth cover and needs no straining, so the muslin cloth fits that as well.
